Tukwila,
Washington shares Seattle’s southern city limit. Tukwila has a population approaching
18,000 and a working population of 45,000.
Tukwila, WA is in the southern end of the Seattle Metropolitan
Area. Tukwila is only minutes east
of Seattle-Tacoma International
Airport. Tukwila surrounds
Interstate-5 Exit 154. Exit 154 is
also mile 0 of Interstate-405.
Tukwila is 12 miles south of downtown Seattle and 17 miles
north of Tacoma on Interstate-5 One
of Tukwila’s major claims to fame is South Center Mall which is located at
I-5 Exit 154 and I-405 Exit 1.
Being located at the confluence of three rivers, a major rail
location, and at the junction of two of Seattle’s major freeways,
Interstate-5 and Interstate-405 has meant that Tukwila is a great place of
industry to locate. That is one
reason Tukwila has more jobs than population.
A
Little History
Originally inhabited by the Duwamish tribe who lived in
longhouses on the Black and Duwamish rivers, the area was called Tukwila,
which means "land where the hazelnuts grow." The name did not
become official until 1908 when the Seattle P-I held a name the new town
contest and Tukwila won, incorporating under that name later in the year.
