Snoqualmie Pass (I-90)

Interstate-90 over Snoqualmie Pass is the most heavily traveled highway that crosses Washington state west to east. It is also the lowest pass in the state over the Cascade Mountains.

The highway remains open year-round except for closures during storms and avalanches.  The elevation at the pass is 3,022 feet (921 meters) above sea level.

At the summit there is a ski area and a small community mainly aimed at servicing the snow skiing participants.

The other passes over the Cascade Mountains are Stevens Pass (US-2), White Pass (US-12) and  North Cascades Pass(WA-20).

The Washington State Department of Transportation website has live traffic cameras that offer five different views of the pass. Click here to view the live Snoqualmie pass cameras.

History

In 1855 settlers began talk of creating a road over the cascade mountains, but it took until 1865 for a group of men from Seattle to survey a route for the road over Snoqualmie Pass. That year while the road was still under construction the first wagon train of six wagons traveled over the Pass. On October 7, 1867 the wagon road was completed stretching from Seattle to Ellensburg. Meat dealers who did cattle drives through the pass were the first to take advantage of the new wagon road.

Recreation

With its many trail heads and ski slopes Snoqualmie Pass is a popular area for all kinds of outdoor recreation including camping, backpacking, hiking, mountain biking, downhill and cross-country skiing and snowboarding. Whether winter or summer there is plenty to do at The Summit.

The major industry in the area of the pass is outdoor recreation.  In the winter that industry is mainly snow skiing.  There are four ski areas in the area:  Alpental, Summit West, Summit Central, and Summit East.

Visit the Summit at Snoqualmie Website.
