Seattle’s Downtown Topography
The downtown area of Seattle is located on a
hill that comes up from the waterfront.
The numbered avenues (1st thru 8th) have a
relatively gentle incline to the north but the named streets that go from the
waterfront up through the downtown area are very steep. Some streets are so steep that do not go
all the way to the waterfront. Further
impeding your trip from downtown to the waterfront is the Alaska Viaduct, a
two level freeway that runs just back from the shore. Often you can find a trip from downtown to
the water’s edge a challenge.
If you desire to travel east from Seattle’s
downtown area you will find only two routes, the WA-520 floating bridge and the
I-90 floating bridge as Lake Washington runs
the entire length of the city’s eastern boundary.
As for traveling west, look
for the ferry terminal on Seattle’s
waterfront. Puget Sound runs along Seattle’s entire west
boundary and so the ferries are the only option for traveling west.

Downtown
Seattle
Downtown
Seattle is really made up of six neighborhood areas; the Waterfront Area, the
Seattle Center Area, the Eastlake Area, the Bell Town Area, the
Downtown Area, and the Sports Arena Area.
The Waterfront Area
This
area is where Seattle
began. Today it has the Washington
State Ferry Terminal, the Victoria Ferry Terminal, A trolley line, a
waterfront park, and many restaurants and visitor attractions.
The Seattle
Center Area
This
area hosts Seattle’s most famous attraction,
the Space Needle from which you can view the entire Seattle area. The Space Needle is located in Seattle Center
which houses the opera house, the Repertory Theater, an amusement center,
convention facilities, Key
Bank Center
home of the Seattle Super Sonics, the north terminal of the monorail to
downtown, and a food court. The area
surrounding Seattle
Center is full of
Restaurants and other visitor attractions.
On the north end of Seattle Center there is a public parking garage.

The Eastlake
Area
Is
the north end of downtown Seattle and it
fronts the south end of Lake
Union. There are many restaurants in this area,
especially along the lakefront. This
area is the new up and coming area of Seattle.
The Bell
Town Area
Bell Town is the northwest end of the
downtown area just south of the Seattle Center Area. This area hosts many restaurants, bars,
taverns, and apartments.
Downtown Area
The
Downtown area of Seattle
is full of opportunities to shop and high-rise buildings. The large downtown hotels are also located
in this area. There are also two downtown shopping malls in the downtown
area.

Sports Arena Area
This
area includes China Town, The International District, Pioneer Square, The
Seattle Mariner’s Safeco Field, The Seahawks Qwest Field, and South
Seattle. We have called it the Sports
Arena Area because their buildings dominate the skyline in this area.
