In the Seattle Metropolitan
area there are over 26 cities. The
Greater Seattle area consists of King
County, Washington
State. Seattle
is the largest city in both King County and Washington
State but Seattle
is surrounded by 25 other cities within 20 miles of downtown Seattle.
And this number does not include the cities on the Kitsap Peninsula
like Bremerton and Port Orchard which are
across Puget Sound from Seattle
and reached by Washington State Ferries.
Cities in Seattle Metro
In the green bar to the left
are links to our city pages for the cities in the Seattle Metropolitan
Area. They are grouped by their
proximity to the major highways in the area.
The Seattle Metropolitan area
has three main highways, Interstate-5, Interstate-405, and Interstate-90.
Interstate-5
Interstate-5
begins at the Canadian Border and travels south to the Mexican Border and it
goes right through downtown Seattle
111 miles south of the Canadian Border.
I-5 continues south through Tacoma, Olympia, Chehalis, Kelso, and Vancouver,
WA to Portland,
Oregon on its way to the US / Mexico border.
Interstate-405
Interstate-405 was originally
conceived as a bypass for traffic wanting to avoid the congestion in downtown
Seattle on
Interstate-5. It runs from
Interstate-5 Exit 182 north of Lynnwood (north
of Seattle) down the east side of Lake
Washington and rejoins Interstate-5 at Exit 154 in Tukwila at the south end
of Lake Washington and south of Seattle. Interstate-405 is nearly 30 miles
long. Today, because of the influx in
population on the east side of Lake Washington
the traffic on Interstate-405 is often heavier than Interstate-5 itself. Most of the time we would suggest you stay
on Interstate-5 when going through Seattle.
Interstate-90
Interstate-90
starts just south of downtown Seattle at Interstate-5 Exit 164 and heads east
across the floating bridge that crosses Lake Washington to Issaquah and North
Bend and then heads into the foothills
of the Cascade Mountains to Snoqualmie Pass.
Snoqualmie Pass is the busiest mountain pass in Washington State and the eastern end of the
Seattle Metropolitan area and King County.
