History

Originally home to the Duwamish Tribe, Renton was covered with dense forests and had the Black and Cedar Rivers running through it. The first settlers Henry and Diana Tobin built their home on the banks of the rivers in 1853. When Henry died in 1857, Diana remarried Erasmus Smithers who platted the town of Renton. Smithers along with Captain William Renton founded the Renton Coal Company in 1873. Captain Renton, who was a wealthy businessman also founded the first saw mill and was in charge of construction of the first railroad to the area.
