Our Stadium District starts at Pioneer Square and goes south to the West Seattle Freeway.  On its west side is the Duwamish Waterway and its eastern boundary is Interstate-5.  There is also a small area south of the West Seattle Freeway, between the freeway and the railroad yard where all streets end, except for 1st and 4th Avenues, that we also include in this area.

This district used to the be the industrial district south of the downtown area.  Daily thousands of blue-collar workers occupy the warehouses, truck terminals, and industrial parks as they have for decades.  In the past it has been a no-mans land at night.

In recent years the King Dome was demolished and two glitzy new sports stadiums and an exhibition hall were built in its place in this area.  When there are events in this area the sidewalks and area restaurants that have blossomed in recent years are full of life.  Many of the buildings that have been left vacant when industries closed or moved to new locations are being turned into upscale artists lofts and offices.

We have called this area the Stadium District because it is the stadiums that command the skyline.  Most Seattleites call this the SoDo area (South of the King Dome which is now gone).

The Stadium District is home to Safeco Field where the Seattle Marriners play Major League Baseball.  It is also home to Qwest Field the home of the Seattle Seahawks that play NFL football in the stadium that replaced the demolished King Dome.

Safeco Field

Safeco Field seats 46,621 people and has a closeable roof to keep out the rain on rainy northwest Washington days.  This unique roof system only keeps out the rain it does not fully enclose the stadium.  The Stadium opened on July 15, 1999 with a game between the Seattle Mariners and the San Diego Padres.  The stadium is located at 1250 First Avenue South, Seattle, Washington 98134.

Qwest Field

Qwest Field seats 67,000 people in an all-weather football stadium.  The stadium opened for the 2002 season of the Seattle Seahawks.  Although this field has a partial roof it only covers part of the seating and none of the football field.  The field is also the home of the Seattle Sounders man’s and woman’s soccer teams.
