Location

On this web site we have generally called the Wallingford District the area south of North 50th Street to Lake Union between Aurora Avenue and I-5. On the west side of Wallingford is the Fremont neighborhood and east of I-5 is the University District and the University of Washington. Woodland Park, the Woodland Park Zoo, Green Lake Park and the Green Lake neighborhood are to the north of Wallingford.

Commercial District

Wallingford has a lively commercial district along North 45th Street. Lining both sides of the street are gift shops, trendy restaurants and international eats, coffee houses, bookstores and theaters.

Neighborhood

Craftsman style bungalows from the 1920’s and 30’s, tree-lined streets and a neighborly cooperation among its inhabitants gives a distinct family feel to this neighborhood. Much of the neighborhood is made up of young families. Neighbors frequently walk to their destination be it park, restaurant or home, giving them opportunity to know one another and creating a sense of small town inside a big city.

Gas Works Park

Wallingford overlooks Lake Union, the Seattle skyline and Gas Works Park. This quirky park used to be the sight of a plant that manufactured gas from coal. The importation of natural gas in the 1950’s made the plant unnecessary and it was acquired by the city in 1962, opening as a public park in 1975. Much of the old buildings and machinery were converted into shelter and play areas for the park. Gas Works  is a popular place for kite-flying and is the site of one of Seattle's best places to gather for watching fireworks displays on the fourth of July.  The Burke Gilman Trail runs past Gas Works parking lot.
