The Interbay neighborhood is in the center of a peninsula
that lies between Elliott Bay and the Ship Canal northwest of downtown Seattle. To its west is the Magnolia neighborhood
and to the east is the Queen Anne neighborhood.
To the north on the other
side of the Lake Washington Ship Canal lies Ballard and to the south is the
waterfront neighborhood and Elliott
Bay.
The Interbay neighborhood
gets its name from the BNSF switch yard that runs north and south right
through the middle of the neighborhood in a valley.
Elliott Avenue runs from downtown Seattle
northwest up the shoreline through the Waterfront neighborhood then takes a
45° turn to the right onto 15th
Avenue West.
From here to the Ballard
Bridge over the Ship
Canal you are in the heart of the Interbay neighborhood. This area is industrial stemming from the
easy access to the Great Northern Railroad (now Burlington Northern Santa Fe)
in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.
On each side of the valley there are hills with residential areas on
them. At the southern end of the
valley on the waterfront are Piers 90 and 91.
