Area - Downtown Seattle, WA is located in western Washington on the Interstate-5 corridor on the east shore of Puget Sound.  Puget Sound is some 95 miles east of the Pacific Coast and is connected to the Pacific Ocean by the Strait of Juan de Fuca.  The Olympic Mountains and Olympic National Park are between Seattle and the Pacific Ocean giving Seattle a milder climate than on the coast.  Seattle is located on Elliott Bay.

The downtown area of Seattle, Washington lies at the top of a bluff behind the waterfront area along Elliot Bay.  The bluff is impossible to see because it is lined with buildings and the Alaska Way Viaduct runs along the waterfront on the flatlands at the bottom of the bluff.  However, the steep streets and in some places lack of streets are an indication of the bluff’s existence.  Seattle’s downtown is typical of large city downtowns, full of tall buildings.

Street Map Click on “Street Map” to view a street map of the downtown area.  This map exceeds 200K so it will download slowly if you have dial-up.

The Columbia Tower Building in Downtown Seattle is the tallest building west of the Mississippi.  From the Columbia Tower Club, a private club on the top floor, your look down on the Space Needle that is north of the downtown area.

Interstate-5 goes over the eastern end of Lake Union and the Ship Canal then it goes down the eastern side of the downtown area.  The downtown neighborhood is all about business, high-rise buildings, hotels, shopping, and restaurants.

Seattle is a Cosmopolitan City that has hundreds of attractions.  Below we list only the attractions in the downtown area.  See the individual neighborhood pages for the attractions in that area.  For a listing of all Seattle attractions go to our

Pike Place Market

Pike Place Market, America’s premier farmer’s market opened in 1907 as a place where farmers could gather to sell their produce to eager city dwellers. Today this famous market is not only home to farmers selling produce but also hundreds of year-round commercial businesses, restaurants, crafters, and street performers. For a taste of the best the Northwest has to offer stop by Pike Place Market Monday through Saturday 10am- 6pm and Sundays 11am- 5pm. However, during peak season farmers often open up shop early in the morning.

To find the market go to 1st Avenue and Pike Street and turn west.  You will drive right into the market.  Parking is hard to find but there are several public parking garages in the area.

The Monorail will take you from here to Seattle Center. One way to avoid downtown parking is to park at Seattle Center and take the Monorail to Westlake Center.  Westlake Center offers a mix of national retailers and regional shops.
