City of Butte, MT – Butte has a population of around 33,000 and its elevation is 5716 feet above sea level.  The gold rush in the late 1800’s first brought Butte into city status but it was copper, not gold, that really put Butte on the map.  By the mid 1950’s most of the high-grade ore was mined out and the pit mining of low grade ore had began.
