A bridge over the Sacramento River

The bridge a right goes over the Sacramento River as you enter the downtown area from the west.

The city is located on the junction of two rivers, the Sacramento River and the American River.  Water sports abound on the rivers in the area.  The original form of travel from San Francisco, 90 miles to the southwest, to Sacramento was by riverboat.  There are over 1000 miles of waterways around Sacramento and the river delta.

The beginning of the city happened in 1839 when the Mexican Governor awarded a 48,000 acre land grant to Johann Augustus Sutter and he settled where the Sacramento and American Rivers joined.  When gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill, which he had built 30 miles east of the settlement, the massive influx of people was the beginning of today’s modern city.

The population of the City of Sacramento is around 400,000 and there are around 1.8 million people in the greater Sacramento metropolitan area.
