Jct with US Highway-101 / Leggett, CA

The first 28 miles of Highway 1 west of Leggett to Westport is extremely curvy, winding through the coastal mountains.  We do not recommend this road for RV’s and trailers.

City of Fort Bragg – has a population of around 7,000.  Established in 1857 as home of the Federal Indian Agency to oversee the Mendocino Indian Reservation.  When the reservation was moved the fort was abandoned.  Today it is best known as the main terminal of the California Western Railway better known as the “skunk train.”

City of Mendocinohas a population of almost 1000.  Was Cabot Cove, Maine on “Murder She Wrote.”  Has many 19th century buildings which reflect the heritage of the New Englanders that settled the area.  There are many wineries south east of town in Anderson Valley.

Village of Little River

 

Pygmy Forest is located 3 mi. east of CA-1 on Little River Airport Road.  The trees are over 50 years old and only two or three feet tall.  There are pygmy pine and pygmy cypress trees in the forest.

CA-128 travels east from here to Cloverdale on US-101 through the Anderson Valley.

The road south of here to the Junction with US-101 is extremely curvy and we do not recommend that people who are afraid of heights, trailers, or RV’s travel this road.

Village of Pt. Arena – Population of under 500

Point Arena Lighthouse and Museum – 1 mi. west of CA-1 on Lighthouse Rd.  This 115 foot tall lighthouse first warned ships in 1870 and was rebuilt in  1908 when an earthquake destroyed the original lighthouse.  Open 10 AM to 3:30 PM daily 4:30 in the summer.

Small village of Gualala (wa-LA-la) – was originally a village of the Pomo Indians at the mouth of the Gualala River.  Settled by redwood loggers and mill workers and now its main industry is tourism

Fort Ross State Historical Parksite of a Russian Fort built in 1812 to protect their land claim from here north to Alaska from the Spanish.  There is a visitor center and restored buildings.  There is a small fee and it will take at least an hour to see this historic site.

The road north of here to Elk is extremely curvy and we do not recommend that people who are afraid of heights, trailers, or RV’s travel this road.

Jct with CA-116 east 12 mi. to Guerneville – population about 2500.

Santa Rosa -  with a population of  about 148,000 is 33 miles east.

 

Sonoma Coast State Beach

Bodega Bay – population of just under 1500.  A quaint community by the sea.
