A photo ofBattery Point Lighthouse.

The Crescent City Area is actually Del Norte County, the Northwest county of California and its Northern Border is the Oregon / California State Line.

The photo is of Battery Point Lighthouse located at the Northwest corner of the Crescent City Harbor.  It was built in 1856.  The lighthouse is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse in California and the 10th oldest lighthouse on the Pacific Coast.  It has operated for over 100 years.   There is a museum with historical displays on the island.  At high tide it is an island but at low this spit of land can be reached by a short walk over the rocky beach.  Watch your time or you will be marooned on the island until the tide goes out again.

Mile 17

Highway 199 to Grants Pass Oregon – Heads East from Highway 101, 17 miles south of the Oregon/California State Line and 4 miles north of Crescent City.  If you drive an RV or don’t like curvy roads, this road is the best choice to go inland to get to Interstate 5.  This is still a mountain pass so don’t expect too much, it still has a lot of curves.

The towns east of Crescent City on Highway 199.

Hiouchi – is 8 miles East of Crescent City on Highway 199.  The city is located on private lands just outside of the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park.  The town is on the Smith River and has public access to the river.  This area abounds with camping, fishing, Redwood Groves, boating, hiking, picnicking, and a lot of places to relax and forget man ever built cities.

Gasquet – is 18 miles east of Crescent City on Highway 199.  The town is named after Horace Gasquet a local pioneer of French descent.  Six Rivers National Forest surrounds the Town.  Only 18 miles from the coast this area offers sunny days when the coast is fog bound and that means significantly warmer temperatures.  The Patrick Creek Lodge & Resort comes highly recommended.  There are many campgrounds in the area and fishing and hiking opportunities flourish.
