A map is loading.....The Northeast Area is made up mainly of three counties, Wallowa, Baker, and Union.  Also, to a greater or lesser part Umatilla County is also included.  This area of the State has tall mountains with mixed forests, deep canyons with rushing rivers, and wide lush valleys full of farmland.

 

 

 

 

The Oregon Trail

It was in Northeast Oregon, near Ontario, Oregon that the settlers first saw Oregon as they crossed the Snake River from what is now Idaho into Oregon.

 

Leave I-84 at Exit 376 in Ontario and follow OR-201 west for 3 mi. until it turns south by the Ontario Municipal Airport then travel 10 mi. south to Nyssa, OR.  Follow the “Oregon Trail” signs along the county roads to Keeney Pass to view the deep wagon ruts that still remain over 100 years after the wagons took this route to the Willamette Valley south of Portland.

 

 

Vale, OR

Drive further, to Vale, OR where you will find the Historic Stone House that was built in 1872.  It served as a hotel, a store, and a post office.

 

 

Baker City, OR

In the center of downtown Baker City, Oregon you will find the Historic Geiser Grand Hotel.  The hotel was build to accommodate the miners and others who flooded the area during the gold rush.  This grand old hotel has been restored and offers the visitor a taste of the grandeur of the era.  There is also an award winning restaurant in the hotel that exceeded our expectations.

 

 

See wild Elk in North Powder, OR

Just north of Baker City at I-5 Exit 285 to North Powder, OR  you will find the city of Powder River.  Head west and follow the “Wildlife Viewing” signs to T&T Horsemanship Tours.  They have horse drawn wagons that will take you to the Elk herds where they are fed by the Department of Game.  You can almost touch the Elk.

Hells Canyon National Recreation Area

The Hells Canyon Recreation Area is managed by the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest.  The deepest river gorge in North America in located in the 653,488 acre National Forest.  Of that area, congress designated 215,000 acres the Hells Canyon Wilderness Area.  The Hells Canyon Recreation area has 15  campgrounds as well as access to the Snake River for jet boats and those who wish to float the river.
