Visitor information about Grants Pass, OR. Grants Pass, Oregon. Grants Pass, OR is located at the Junction of Interstate-5 Exit 55 and US Highway 199, the Redwood Highway. US-199 goes southwest through the Illinois River Valley to Café City and the Oregon Caves. US-199 then goes over the Coastal Mountains to Crescent City, California.

Grants Pass has a population of over 23,000 and an elevation of 951 feet above sea level.

Grants Pass is located on the Rogue River and was originally a stage stop on the California State Route. Today much of its tourist activity revolves around its location on the river. With its moderate climate it is vacation central for river rafting, jet boat trips, hiking, and fishing.

Grants Pass is truly a river town. It has an intimate relationship with the “Wild and Scenic” Rogue River. In the summer various jet boat tours leave from docks on the river right in downtown Grants Pass.

First Impressions

When you first enter the City from Interstate-5 Exit 58 your first impression will be motels and a one way street grid. This is the freeway/tourist end of town. Every town needs an area like this and its OK but don’t stop here unless its late and you need to hurry and get the last room

As you head south from the freeway interchange you will go 2 miles before you see the historic downtown area. It is full of interesting restaurants, gift shops, antique dealers, and other interesting businesses.

In another few blocks you will come to the bridge over the Rogue River. Much of what is interesting about Grants Pass is along the river so don’t overlook this area.

When you cross over the Rogue you will come to an interchange that goes to the right (west) to head to the Illinois River Valley and Crescent City, CA on the Pacific Coast on US-199.

To the left US-199 heads east to Interstate-5 at Exit 55 and if you go straight you will be on the Rogue River Highway. All three roads have a lot to discover.

A little History

Grants Pass was a pretty sleepy little community on the Rogue River until the railroad arrived around 1880. The first industry in the area was gold mining but the enduring industry has been the lumber industry. Today tourism is a major factor in the economy.

Travel south on I-5 to Exit 30, go north on OR-62 about 10 mi. to Eagle Point, turn right on Royal Avenue and proceed NE for about 1.2 mi. to the mill.
