Oregon Highway 240

To Cape Arago and the Village of Charleston

The harbor at Charleston is full of boats, both commercial and pleasure craft.

 

 

Highway 240 begins in the City of North Bend at Mile Post 235 on Highway 101.

 

 

Mile Post 0

Turn west onVirginia Avenue, go to Broadway and turn left (south) and continue to Newmark Street.

 

Turn right ( west ) on Newmark Street, continue until you cross the bridge over South Slough

 

Here you will find Pony Village Mall in about ½ mile.  There are over 60 stores in the mall.

 

Mile Post 2

Southwestern Oregon Community College

The Empire District – The original European settlement in Coos County.  This Village remained a separate community until 1965 when they merged with The City of Coos Bay.

 

Mile Post 8

Charleston – This village’s activities center around the boat basin.  There are charter boats, guest floats to moor your boat after you launch at the boat ramp.  There are gift shops, restaurants, RV parks, and lodging in the area.

 

Beyond Charleston is the Junction with the Seven Devils Road which runs along the South Slough Estuarine Sanctuary and finally arrives back at Highway 101

 

Mile Post 10

Bastendorff Beach County Park – Day use facilities plus 80 camping spaces.  Coos County Parks 541-396-3121

 

Mile Post 11

Sunset Bay State Park –  Day use picnic area and 139 RV and camping spaces and 10 yurts in the Oregon State Parks Reservations System.

 

Mile Post 12

Shore Acres State Park –  This day use park was the estate of Louis Simpson in the days when timber was king in this area.  The houses are long gone but a glass shelter and the botanical gardens survive.  The enclosed shelter is a great place to watch the ocean on a rainy day or in an ocean storm.

 

Mile Post 13

View Point – This rest stop has great views of the ocean wildlife on Shell Island and Simpson Reef

 

Mile Post 14

– Cape Arago State Park – This day use park has a trail along the bluff as is also a great place to view the ocean wildlife.

 

The road returns to Highway 101 at this point.
