Silverton is in the heart of the Willamette River Valley about 14 miles east of Salem. It is one of the most agriculturally productive regions in the world.

Where is Silverton?

Silverton is most easily found by taking Interstate-5 south from Portland, Oregon and traveling 42 miles south to I-5 Exit 256. Travel 0.3 mile east to Lancaster Avenue, Turn right onto OR-213, the Silverton Road, travel 10.5 miles east to Silverton.

Silverton is located 14 miles east of Interstate-5 at Salem, Oregon, the capital of Oregon. It is also located only 60 miles from the Pacific Coast, on OR-18 and OR-22, through the Siuslaw National Forest over the coastal

A little bit about Silverton.

In 1846 settlers James Smith and John Barger established a sawmill on Silver Creek about 20 miles east of where the creek empties into the Willamette River. A small settlement, named Milford, grew around the sawmill. In 1854, Milford was abandoned and the businesses in the city moved down stream to what is now Silverton. In 1885 the City of Silverton was incorporated. By 1894 the City’s population had grown to about 900 people.

In those early years there were two dams on Silver Creek, on for using waterpower to mill flour at the Fischer Flour Mill and down stream another dam to use the water power to run the equipment at a sash and door company. In general, the timber industry drover the economy of the town until the industry’s decline in recent years.

Silverton Today

Silverton is known as “Oregon’s Garden City.” That is because the Oregon Garden, a 60 acre botanical garden is located here. The garden is still growing and will probably have a final size of around 240 acres. The Garden features thousands of unique and local plants in over 20 specialty gardens. It is nor the major tourism attraction in the area.

A second attraction in Silverton is the murals painted on the walls in the downtown area. The community has a thriving community of galleries, antique shops, and eating establishments.

Yet another attraction in the area is Silver Falls State Park with its Trail of Ten Waterfalls which has the unique aspect of a trail that even goes under waterfalls that fall from outcroppings. There is more information about these attractions listed below under Recommended Attractions.

Gallon House Bridge over Abiqua Creek Oregon’s oldest covered bridge. Just northwest of Silverton Hwy 214 to Hobart Rd, West to Gallon House Rd then turn north. The bridge is open to traffic.
