City of Salem Salem has a population of almost 110,000 and is the capital of
Oregon. Jason Lee, a Methodist
missionary, founded the city in 1841. He laid out the city and sold lots to
finance the building of Oregon Institute, the first institution of higher
learning west of the Missouri. Later
the college became Willamette University.
The Civic Center is a real people place with trails, black swans,
sculptures and places to sit and watch people.
