Where is Philomath?

Philomath is most easily found by traveling 72 miles south of Portland on Interstate-5 and exiting at Exit 228. Head west to Corvallis. Continue west on US-20 for 6 miles and you will find Philomath.

Philomath, Oregon is in the Interstate-5 corridor on the west side of the Willamette River Valley about 80 miles south of Portland, Oregon. It is about 25 miles south of Salem, the Capital of Oregon.

The Weather

Philomath is warmer and has less rain and fog than the cities on the Oregon Coast because it is on the eastern slope of the Coastal Mountain Range. Those mountains give the Willamette Valley a better growing season and milder winters. Only rarely does the temperature get above 90 degrees or below 20 degrees. The average annual temperature is 55 degrees and its average annual rainfall is 38 inches.

About Philomath

Mary’s Peak, the tallest mountain in the Coastal Range in Oregon lies west of Philomath. It greets visitors with a snow cap most of the year. To the west of Philomath you will find beautiful green forests and to the east of Philomath you will find the farmlands of the Willamette River Valley.

The City of Philomath was incorporated in 1882. It is located in Benton County Oregon. The City lies 280 feet above sea level. You pronounce the name “Fill-O-Math” and is derived from two Greek words meaning “lover of learning”.

The name Philomath comes from Philomath College that was established here in 1867. As people settled around the College they decided to form a city and took on the name of the college. The college no longer exists and the Benton County Historical Society occupies the restored main building.
