Molalla is 15.0 miles east of Woodburn, OR. Woodburn is 29 miles south of Portland on Interstate-5. Take Interstate-5 Exit 271 (Woodburn) and head east on OR-214. In 2.5 miles you come to OR-99E, continue straight. When you cross OR-99E the road designation changes to OR-211 (The Woodburn-Estacada Highway) In 11.1 miles you will cross OR-213 (The Cascades Highway South). Continue 1.5 miles and you will be in downtown Molalla.

Estacada is 21.2 miles farther east and north on OR-211. Mulino is 12 miles north of Molalla on OR-213. Oregon city is 23 miles north of Molalla on OR-213.

A little History of the area

The first land claim in this area was filed in 1840. This area was originally called Dickey Prairie. Originally the only public structure in the area was a one room school house on land donated by the Baty Family. In 1850 a post office was built and in 1857 a general store was built. That school was replaced with a new structure with a bell in 1889 and the a newer structure that still exists was built in 1928. The bell from the 1889 school stands atop the newer school.

One of the original businesses in the area was the Dickey Prairie Store. Though the building has changed over the years, the business is still operating. Probably the community got its name from the Molala River which runs through the area. The river probably got its name from the Molalla Indian Tribe that originally inhabited the area. The decendents of the tribe now live in Grande Ronde Reservation on the west side of the Willamette Valley.
