Where is Cottage Grove, Oregon?

Cottage Grove is most easily found by heading south on Interstate-5 from Portland, OR. Travel 124 miles to I-5 Exit 176. You will find Cottage Grover west of the freeway.

Cottage grove is about an hour from Oregon’s Pacific Coast and about a half-hour from the recreational opportunities offered by the Cascade Mountain Range.

South of Cottage Grove the Cascade Mountains come together with the Coastal Range Mountains.

Cottage Grove is located at the confluence of the Coast Fork of the Willamette River and the Row River. According to some it is this confluence that marks the southern end of the Willamette Valley.

Bohemia Mining District

If you head into the Bohemia Mining District you will see remnants of the gold mining history in this area. Located on the north slope of the Calapooya Mountains this area was first mined in 1864 and is still mined on and off today. Unfortunately, most of the historic mining equipment was salvaged for scrap iron during World War II.

The museums in the area are the best source of information about the past mining activities in the area. There is a Bohemia Mining Days Celebration held annually. The area offers covered bridges, abandoned mines, ghost towns, and other abandoned items that can be seen by car.

Before entering the district check with the Cottage Grove Ranger Station 541-942-5591. Keep in mind that even though the area is National Forest Property, the active mines have private property rights and those rights should be respected.
