Visitor information about Newport, OR.
Newport, Oregon is located on the north shore of Yaquina Bay on the
Central Oregon Coast. Newport is
located at the Junction of US-101 and US-20. It is 25 miles south of Lincoln City, 49
miles north of Florence, and 57 miles west of Corvallis.
Getting There
The easiest way to access Newport is from Interstate-5 Exit 234 in the
Albany / Corvallis area and head west on US Highway-20.
US-20 offers a beautiful drive through the Coastal Mountains to
Oregon’s Central Coast.
About Newport
Newport, OR has about 10,000 residents but its population swells during
the tourist season. Newport was incorporated on October 23, 1882. The first road to Newport was completed
in 1927 but it had already become a popular tourist destination.
The Historic Bayfront
The Historic Bayfront area in Newport is located on the north shore of
Yaquina B ay. The waterfront looking
west in the Bayfront area is shown below with the bridge over Yaquina Bay
(US-101) shown in the background.

|
The Historic
Bayfront is a little hard to find.
Look for Hurbert Street and turn east. It will take you down to the harbor and
the Historic Bayfront area. You can
also use Bay Street it is about 3 blocks north of the Bridge and State
park.
Nye Beach
For years we saw
the sign for Nye Beach and drove right past. On our last visit to Newport we took the
turn and to our surprise found more than a beach, we found a quaint
shopping area with its own parking lot right by the beach.

The Parking Lot and
beach at Nye Beach
|
Nye Beach is not too hard to find, turn west on 3rd
street and then right in 0.3 mi. onto Coast Street. The arch will be on the left in about
half a block but you won’t be able to read the lettering without getting
out of your car. Our first
impression was that it was a private driveway or walkway but that is not
the case. Go through the arch, the
parking lot is down the hill.
Places to visit
in Newport
The Chamber of
Commerce lists a lot of places you may want to visit in their
brochure. They are, “The Oregon
Coast Aquarium, Yaquina Head Interpretive Center, Lighthouse, and tide
pools, Yaquina Bay
|
|
Lighthouse, Historic
Bayfront, Historic Nye Beach, Mark O. Hatfield Marine Science
Center, Lincoln
County Museums, Vietnam Memorial Park & Vetrans’ Memorial Commemorative
Walk at Don Davis Park, Visual Arts Center, Yaquina Arts Center, Performing
Arts Center, and many more family attractions.”
The thing about
Newport is that the list doesn’t stop there. There are lots of unique shopping
opportunities, at least 5 beaches, golf, a swimming pool, charters for
whale watching, fishing, harbor cruises, storm watching in the winter, and
a plethora of events through the year.
