Oregon City was
the first incorporated city west of the Rocky
Mountains. It was
established in 1829 By Dr. John McLaughlin as a lumber mill by Willamette Falls and incorporated in 1844. It became the Capitol of the Oregon Territory in 1849. It was the end of the Oregon
Trail.
The city has a great
history page

Wine
The growing of the grape has become a major part of the
agriculture of Oregon. You don’t have to go very far from the
city limits in any direction to find vines like those shown in the photo to
the left.
The wine industry on Oregon is made up of smaller wineries
with limited production. That is Oregon’s secret, a
large number of quality wineries making an infinite variety of wines.

The Falls
Oregon City was a trans-shipment point on the Willamette River because of the falls. Boats would come down the river to the
top of the falls, unload their goods, the goods would be transported to the
bottom of the falls and then loaded on boats headed for Portland,
the Columbia River, and around the world.
In 1873 a lock was built so that boats could continue
down the River through the lock and on to Portland and beyond.
