Waitsburg is 22 mi. northeast of Walla Walla on US Highway-12. Ten miles to the east is the City of Dayton. The population of Waitsburg is just over 1,000 people.

Waitsburg’s historic downtown has a library, motel, restaurants, pizza parlor, tavern, gift shops, grocery store, hardware store and antique and gift shops. Waitsburg is not just a “Rest Stop” on your way along US-12, it offers the visitor an interesting day of shopping and dining.

Waitsburg became an incorporated city on November 25, 1881 before the State of Washington existed. It is the only city in Washington State to operate under its territorial charter.

“Rest Stop”

In Preston Park Waitsburg has a convenient “Rest Stop” with restrooms open from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM. We used the facility on our last trip in the area and it was immaculately clean. This park would be a great place to have a picnic lunch.

The park is within walking distance of the Touchet River, the Lewis & Clark Sculpture, and Historic Downtown Waitsburg. Plan to take the time to see all the things that Waitsburg has to offer

Some input from a local.

One of my favorite places to go in Waitsburg is the hardware store. You can usually find just about anything you need and if they don't have it they'll try to get it for you. The Waitsburg Hardware and Mercantile is one of the social hubs of town. Throughout the day people stop in to sit around the pot bellied stove to have a free cup of coffee and cookie. John and Marilyn Stellwagon, the owners, are eager to visit with everyone. In addition to running a great store they provide a service to our community by operating Black Dog Rescue. They take in abandoned or abused dogs and cats, rehabilitate them, and then put them up for adoption.

If you are in the mood for some outstanding cuisine make sure to call in reservations at the Whoopemup Hollow Cafe. They serve delicious southern comfort dinners and you must try their famous Coca Cola Cake. They have had several write ups in magazines including Gourmet Magazine. Afterwards stroll across the street for a martini at Jimgermanbar. Jim German serves up fine drinks and Etruscan snacks.

Plan on staying overnight at the Nothing New Lodging. They have renovated the second story above their antique store with two suites decorated with antiques and a feel of times gone by.

As you cross over the bridge leading East on Hwy 12 you come to a leather repair/craft store (Irving's Leather) on the left and a brewing company (Laht Neppur) on the right. Both are definitely worth stopping at.

In addition to all these great places to visit, Waitsburg is home to some very talented artists. We also have several businesses that make hand made/grown products such as wheat berries, candles, and garlic. Find out more about them on our web site.

Historic Waitsburg

On our first visit to Waitsburg in 2007 we were struck by the number of historic brick 2-story buildings in downtown Waitsburg.

Waitsburg’s beginning in 1865 was a grist mill on the Touchet River constructed by Sylvester M. Wait, the town’s founding father, to mill grain for the surrounding farms.

In 1881 when the railroad arrived Waitsburg bloomed as it became the link to the markets for the products grown and milled locally. For more information visit the City's history page on the City website.

It is a wooded park with old growth trees along the Touchet River 24 standard campsites that will accept trailers up to 28 feet long.	Preston Park Coppi Avenue & Preston Avenue Visit the Park's website. US Highway-12 is heading north when it enters Waitsburg and makes a right turn onto Preston Avenue as it heads out of town to the east. At this turn you will find Preston Park. It is a great rest stop and has restrooms open from 8AM to 4:30 PM.
