WA-Counties01-Whitman

Visitor information about the City of Pullman, Washington.  Pullman is the home of Washington State University.

Pullman, WA is located in Whitman County in southeast Washington State.  Whitman County is in Washington State’s Palouse.  The Palouse is known for its steep rolling hills.  This is wheat country.  Whitman County is shown in red on the Washington State map to the left.

Pullman has a population in the 27,000 range with an economic base of faculty, students, public employees, some high tech industry and agriculture.

Washington State University and the University of Idaho located 9-miles east of Pullman in Moscow, ID. have a major impact on the local economy and social life of the communities.

Although one would think that it is the student population that is the major factor, in fact it is probably the faculty and staff that have the major effect on the community.  Whatever it is, there is no question that this area is radically enhanced by the educational institutions in the area.

The Pullman area, originally called the Three Rivers area, was initially settled in the 1850’s but its first real benchmark of a community took place in 1881 when a post office was established in Pullman, WA

Pullman lies at the junction of US Highway-195 and WA-27 in the southeast corner of Whitman County.  Pullman is 9-miles form the Washington/Idaho state line.  Pullman is about 75-miles south of Spokane via US-195.
