The Okanogan Scenic Byway Loop

The Okanogan Scenic Byway Loop begins in Twisp, goes over Loup Loup Pass to Okanogan then north up toe Okanogan River Valley thru Omak to Tonasket.  From Tonasket it heads east over Wauconda Pass in the Collville National Forest to Republic.  The loop continues east through the Collville National Forest to Lake Roosevelt, the lake behind Grand Coulee Dam.  The loop continues east to Kettle Falls and then Collville.  Highway-20 then heads east through the Colville National Fores to the west bank of the Pend Orielle River.  The loop continues south up the river to the town of Newport on the Idaho / Washington State line.  Our loop then heads southwest to Spokane on US-2 then follows US-2 west through Davenport, Wilbur, Coulee City, Waterville and then to Wenatchee, the loops southern portal.

 

This loop can be driven easily in two days but we would suggest 3 or 4 days or more are appropriate.  This loop can be combined with the North Cascades Scenic Byway Loop to give you a feel of the northern tier of Washington State.

 

North cascade Loop Scenic Byway

The North cascade Loop Scenic Byway loops through the north Cascade Mountain beginning in Burlington, WA on highways; WA-20, WA-153, US-97, US-97A, and US-2 going over  two different passes in the Cascade Range and visiting the cities of Wenatchee, Cashmere, and Leavenworth to name just a couple in eastern Washington before returning to Interstate-5 in Everett, WA.

Omak –  Elevation 837 feet above sea level and has a population of over 1,600.

 

Omak and Okanogan are only 5 mi. apart so it is difficult to tell where one city ends and the other begins.  You will find the primary business in this area is apple orchards but “Baby’s Breath” farming is also a growing part of the economy.  For those of you who aren’t florists, “Baby’s Breath” is used a lot in bouquets.

Kettle Falls – has an elevation of 1,625 feet above sea level and a population of over 1,500.  Before is was flooded by Lake Roosevelt there was a falls here were the native Americans gathered in great numbers to gather Salmon to dry for the long cold winter.  In 1825 the Hudson’s Bay Company built a gristmill near here at Myers Falls making it the first white settlement east of the Cascade Mountains in Washington State.
