Spokane, WA is located in
eastern Washington State about 18 miles west of the Washington / Idaho
state line. Interstate-90 goes right
through Spokane on the south side of the Historic Downtown area.
North Spokane
North Spokane consists of
all of the City of Spokane that lies north of the Spokane River with the
exception of the north bank of the River which we class as still in the
downtown area of Spokane.
Through downtown
Spokane, from where Interstate-90 comes in from the southwest and turns
east, the Spokane River roughly follows the freeway about 7 blocks to the
north. The area between the freeway
and the river is historic downtown Spokane.
North
Spokane stretches out for about 8 miles north of the Spokane River. The City measures about 5-miles from west
to east. The River winds north and
runs up the west side of North Spokane.

North Spokane is
radically different from historic downtown Spokane. As you can see in the photo to the right
a good share of the buildings in the downtown area exceed five stories tall.
Most of the buildings in
North Spokane hover around one or two story architecture so buildings like
the County Building, shown below, with its tower really stand out.

Although North Spokane is
, in general, is laid out in a north/south and east/west grid; it is very frustrating to the visitor
because many of the streets make turns or dont go through. We highly suggest you have a map in hand
and study it in advance before driving in the area.
