WA-S-OceanBeaches.jpgOysterville

Longbeach, Washington is located on the southern Washington Pacific Coast.

Oysterville is on the east coast of the Long Beach Peninsula on Willapa Bay.  It is 15 miles to the north, up the peninsula from the main road onto the peninsula.  Oysterville is a very small community and I’ll bet you can guess where it got its name.  That’s right, they harvest oysters here.

First settled in 1854 by R.H. Espy and I.A. Clark.  The tidelands here were covered with oysters.  They harvested the oysters and shipped them to San Francisco during the gold rush.  In 1855 over 500 people lived in Oysterville and it became the county seat of Pacific County.  In the 1880’s when a railroad came to the Peninsula it ended at Nahcotta, four miles to the south of Oysterville.  That isolation and the fact that the oysters and the markets for the oysters were both greatly diminished led to the literal abandonment of the city by its population.  In 1893 the county seat was moved to South Bend, WA.  Today little remains of the community.  We found a walking tour and some history.
