Anacortes is on Fidalgo Island which is separated from the mainland by Swinomish Slough. Fidalgo Island and Anacortes is connected to the mainland by three bridges, one in La Conner and two on State Highway-20. It is also connected to Whidbey Island by a bridge on Highway-20.

Anacortes has a population of nearly 15,000. Anacortes has kept is small town feel through the years and really only has one commercial area and that is Commercial Street. Part of the reason for that is that there is a major regional mall only 16 miles away in Burlington.

Where is Anacortes?

Anacortes is most easily found by taking Interstate-5 Exit 230 at Burlington, 60 miles north of Seattle, and turning west onto State Highway-20 (WA-20). Travel west about 12 miles and you will find a branch where WA-20 turn left (south) to Oak Harbor and Whidbey Island and WA-20A goes straight to Anacortes. Continue strait for 4 miles and you will find yourself in Anacortes. In south Anacortes you will come to what appears to be an abrupt end of the highway. Turn right onto Commercial Street, WA-20A continues on Commercial Street to 12^th Street where it turns left (west) to the Washington State Ferry terminal to the San Juan Islands. Continue straight on Commercial Street at 12^th and you will find the Historic Downtown Area.
