Scenic Byway in Washington State

 

Below are listed the camping & RV sites we recommend that are located along the Cascade Loop Scenic Byway.  Click on the cities below to jump to the listings for that city.

 

The North Cascades loop begins at Interstate-5 Exit 230.  It heads east on WA-20 (SR-20) from Burlington, WA across the Skagit River Valley into the Cascade Mountains.  It goes through the cities of Sedro Woolley, Concrete, Rockport, Marblemount, Newhalem, Diablo, through the North Cascades National Park and over Washington Pass, the Okanogan National Forest and the towns of Mazama, Winthrop, and Twisp to the Junction with WA-153.

You will see the designation SR-153 (State Route) for clarity we use WA-153 to not get confused with State Routes in other states on this web site.

 

WA-153 is a 31 mi. long highway which heads south down the Methow River Valley from the WA-20 / WA-153 junction east of Twisp to join with US-97 just south of Pateros, WA on the west shore of the Columbia River.  The towns of Carlton and Methow are located on this highway.

US-97A from Pateros to Wenatchee

US Highway 97-A goes down the west side of the Columbia River from its junction with Washington State Highway 153 to the City of Wenatchee where it has a junction with US Highway-2.  The towns of Pateros, Azwell, Chelan, Entiat, and Wenatchee are on this stretch of US-97 and US-97A

US Highway-2 from Wenatchee to Everett, WA

The North Cascades Loop then heads west on US-2 over Stevens Pass and back to Interstate-5 Exit 194 in Everett, WA.  This leg of the North Cascades Loop goes through the cities of Wenatchee, Cashmere, Leavenworth, then the villages of Coles Corner, Nason Creek , Merritt, and Berne, then over Stevens Pass, then through the cities of Skykomish, Index, Gold Bar, Startup, Sultan, Monroe, and Snohomish before arriving at Interstate-5 in Everett.

State Parks

 

Bayview State Park

Located just north of WA-20 between Burlington and Anacortes on Puget Sound.

 

The park is 6 mi west of Burlington (I-5 Exit 230) on WA-20 (route to San Juan Ferries) and then turn at the traffic lights and go 3 mi. north on the Bayview-Edison Road.

Deception Pass State Park

Located where WA-20 crosses Deception Pass to go onto Whidbey Island.  The park faces Puget Sound and the Strait of  San Juan de Fuca. 

 

The park is 18.2 miles west of Burlington (I-5 Exit 230) on WA-20.  Watch for the left turn at 11.2 mi. to Whidbey Island and Oak Harbor.

Rasar State Park    - 15 mi. east of Sedro Woolley

Located between mile posts 82 and 83.  Turn south (right if eastbound) onto Lusk Road, go one mile and turn left on the Cape Horn Road, park entrance is in one mile.

Eagle watching on the Skagit River is a favorite pastime at this park.  There are 18 standard sites, 20 utility sites with power & water, 8 walk-in sites, 2 ADA sites, and two Adirondack (3 sided shelter) sites.  This park is in the reservation system, see the park’s web site for information.

Camp among “Old Growth Forest” and wonder at the ancient trees in the camp site.  The park has 50 RV sites with utilities and 8 camping sites.  There is also an RV dump station.  Campsites are first come basis.

Newhalem

Both Newhalem and Diablo are company towns owned by Seattle City Light.  During construction and early operation of the dams these towns flourished.  Recently much of the function of the dams has been automated and can even be controlled from Seattle so the school has closed and the current population is quite small.

WA-153 is a 31 mi. long highway which heads south down the Methow River Valley from the WA-20 / WA-153 junction east of Twisp to join with US-97 just south of Pateros, WA on the west shore of the Columbia River at the confluence of the Methow and Columbia Rivers.  The towns of Carlton and Methow are located on this highway.

The Beebe bridge crosses over the Columbia River just south of  here and US-97 travels along the east side of the Columbia River from East Wenatchee to here.  US-97 continues north on the west side of the Columbia River.

They have 165 full hook up sites for RV's (water, electric, sewer & cable), which will accommodate up to a 40' RV including 22 sites with 16 x16 tent pads for those campers who enjoy sleeping out under the stars. There are picnic tables, a dump station available and ADA accessible restrooms and showers. Lake Chelan State Park

This 127-acre park is located in forest on the south shore of Lake Chelan.  It has 6,000 feet of shoreline.  It is hot and dry in the summer and averages 42 inches of snow in the winter.  The park is open year round for camping and day use.   The park has 109 tent spaces, 35 RV spaces with hookups, five restrooms, and 5 showers.

Daroga State Park

Located 18 mi. north of East Wenatchee on the east bank of the Columbia River on US-97.  This 90-acre camping park has 1.5 mi. of river shoreline.  This park has 17 tent sites and 28 RV sites with utilities.  There is a boat launch, RV Dump, and four restrooms with a total of 12 showers.  All sites are first come, first served.

Located 3 mi. north of Orondo.  This 5 acre park has 10 tent sites and 14 RV sites with power & water.  Amenities include boat launch, swimming, short-term moorage, picnic shelters, concessions, horseshoe pits, JetSki rentals, and marina with fuel.

Located 7 mi. north of East Wenatchee on the east bank of the Columbia River on US-97.

Here the Columbia is formed into Lake Entait by the Rocky Reach Dam.  The park is popular for sun-bathing, swimming and water skiing.  This park has 27 tent sites, 67 RV sites with utilities of which 32 have sewer.

This 197-acre park is open for camping year round.  The park has 8 tent spaces, 51 RV spaces with full hookups with max. vehicle length of 65 feet.
