Concrete

This small town in the Cascade foothills was originally two cities, Baker and Cement City.  In 1909 the two cities merged and decided on the name Concrete because of the two Portland Cement manufacturing companies that had located in the city.  One of the plants operated a limestone plant over the hill and transported the rock to the cement plant in down in buckets supported by a cable system which looked much like a ski lift system.  There are still some remnants of these industries such as large silos visible in the town.

The City of Cashmere, WA lies on the banks of the Wenatchee River in Eastern Washington.  Actually, it is at the geographic center of the State of Washington.

The City has a population of around 27,000, and elevation of  895 feet above sea level, gets around 13 inches of rain a year and has 300 days of sunshine a year.  The valley and the hillsides around the city are filled with fruit orchards.

A photo is loading......The main visitor attraction in Cashmere is Liberty Orchards.  This third generation family business makes Applets & Cotlets among its may varieties of fruit candies and has a wonderful storefront at its factory which as factory tours showing the candy being manufactured.  We drove by this sign for many years and didn’t make use of their friendly offer.  Recently we went on the tour and highly recommend it.  The rendering to the left is from the Cashmere Tourism web site.

Back in the good old days of steam locomotives the back room of the Skykomish Hotel used to be a favorite card playing spot for railroad employees on layover.  The old railroad depot still stands in Skykomish, but Amtrak doesn’t stop there, it just highballs right through town.
