The Northwest
Corner
Whatcom County is the most
northwest county in the Continental United States. However, Washington State is unique in
that it has two points that are furthest northwest. Blaine, Washington (shown on the map
above) is the most north of the two.
Blaine is on the border that seperates Canada from the United
States.
The other most northwest
point in Washington State is Cape Flattery
that is on the Olympic Peninsula.
Cape Flattery is further west by 100 miles than Blaine but it is not
as far north. Cape Flattery is on
the Pacific Ocean at the opening to the Strait of Juan de Fuca that
seperates the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State from Vancouver Island
in Canada.
Whatcom County
Whatcom County’s western
border faces the San Juan Islands.
It’s northern border is the Canada / US border. It’s eastern border (not shown on the
map) is the crest of the Cascade
Mountains and its southern border is Skagit County. Bellingham is the County Seat of Whatcom
County.
About 95% of the
population of Whatcom County lives in the west 25 miles of this 90 mile
wide county. Much of the eastern two
thirds of the county is in Mount Baker – Snoqualmie National Forest and the
North Cascades National Park. The
county has a population of just under 200,000 people.
