WA-10W-Ferndale.jpgFerndale, WA is about 9 miles north of Bellingham in northwestern Washington.  Ferndale is about 14 miles south of the US/Canada border and can be found at Interstate-5 Exit 263.

Ferndale was incorporated in 1907 and today has a population of around 11,000.  Ferndale is a quiet community along the banks of the Nooksack River.  In fact it is the last city the river travels through on its way from the slopes of Mt. Baker to Bellingham Bay.

Ferndale’s downtown is really split in two by the Nooksack River.  Near Interstat-5 the east end of the downtown has been build in the last few years.  It is full of new buildings and new businesses while the west end, accessed by an underpass under the BNSF railway’s tracks and a bridge over the Nooksack River, is the historic downtown with quaint shops and restaurants.

Centennial Riverwalk Park

In 2007 the city built a riverfront park to commemorate the City of Ferndale’s centennial year (2007).  There are educational signs and benches along the walkway.  At the Main Street Plaza there are benches and a fountain to enjoy.

Pioneer Park

Pioneer Park is a true and irreplaceable treasure.  This park displays eleven of the original buildings built in Whatcom County and the contents that were found in such buildings when they were built in the last half of the 1800’s.  The buildings and their contents are available for public viewing.  For more information see Recommended Parks.

Hovander Homestead Park

The Hovander Homestead is one of the original homesteads along the Nooksack River.  The County was luck enough to have the Hovander Family donate the farm and its large buildings to the county for a park.  The park is located south of town, turn south off Main Street at the BNSF overpass.  For more information see Recommended Parks
