The Fairhaven District is located on the south side of Bellingham, WA. This charming historical district offers unique shopping and dining.  Fairhaven is also Bellingham’s major transportation hub. In Fairhaven you will find the Bellingham Cruise Terminal where the Alaska Ferry departs from each week on its journey north. The Amtrak /Greyhound station is also located in Fairhaven. Amtrak offers train service between Portland, Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia making stops in Blaine, Bellingham, Mount Vernon and Everett.

History

Fairhaven was established in the late 1880’s and there was much speculation that it would be the western terminus for a trans-continental railroad.  When Seattle was chosen, Fairhaven fell on bad times and hundreds of people who had come to build the new town left. A few years later the people who had remained came together to build a community, however smaller than originally expected.

HarrisAve02Fairhaven cruised along as a small town through the turn of the century.  When it consolidated with four other towns to form the City of Bellingham it was at a low ebb.  From then until the 1970’s Fairhaven was pretty quiet and had a lot of vacant buildings.  In the 1970’s a forward looking developer bought up many of the empty buildings and began a building boom in Fairhaven.

Today many of the original buildings have been remodeled and refurbished, while preserving their beautiful turn-of-the-century architecture.  Fairhaven is a charming area filled with restaurants, pubs and coffee houses, unique shops, antiques, book stores and art galleries, and luxurious spas and lodging.

Attractions

VillageGreen02Village Green

The Village Green located at Mill avenue and 10th Street in Fairhaven is a public gathering spot for all kinds of events. In the summers it is home to many concerts, the Fairhaven Outdoor Cinema and the Wednesday Bellingham Farmer’s Market. Village Books, located next to the Village Green sponsors many guest authors and other special events held here throughout the year. At one end of the green is a small stage back dropped by a beautiful mural depicting historic Fairhaven. The artist, Lanny Little, has even incorporated an unique self portrait of himself painting the mural into the scene.

Boulevard Park

This small park on the Bellingham Bay Waterfront is one of Bellingham’s most beautiful parks and a popular place to watch sunsets, fly kites or play a game of Frisbee. Kids will enjoy the boat shaped play structure and looking for sea creatures along the beach. And if the beautiful scenery isn’t enough there is also wonderful outdoor art. Take the boardwalk across the water and walking trails to connect to the Fairhaven District. Located at South State Street and Bayview Drive in Graphic1Bellingham.

Marine Park

This is a quiet little park with few amenities except a great view of the bay and the San Juan Islands. There is a covered picnic area as well as a few picnic tables and benches. There is no playground or swing set, just waterfront and a small grassy area. Wonderful place to watch the sun rise and set. Located at 200 Harris Avenue in Bellingham.

Fairhaven Park

Located at the north end of Chuckanut Drive is Fairhaven Park. This community park has a water spray park for kids, playground, two picnic shelters, barbeques and picnic tables as well as a soccer field, basketball court, and hiking trails. Other special features of the park include the adjacent Padden Creek with its waterfalls and salmon run and the Fairhaven Rose Test Gardens.

Located at 107 Chuckanut Drive in Bellingham.

We have found no comparable experience to taking a boating trip from Bellingham, WA, USA to Victoria, BC, Canada through the San Juan Islands.  Victoria / San Juan Cruises' narrated excursions through the San Juan Islands to Victoria, B.C., are one of the Northwest's most unforgettable experiences.

In the San Juan Islands, you may see a variety of marine wildlife, including Orca Whales, eagles, harbor seals and porpoise.

In Victoria, there is high-tea at the Empress, hundreds of shops, the inner harbor, Buchart Gardens, The Royal BC Museum, and so many other “must-sees” that we suggest an overnight stay, and two or three nights would be better.

As if that wasn’t enough, they serve an all you can eat salmon and chicken dinner onboard on the way back to Bellingham along with the sunsets over the islands.
