A little History of Shaw Island
Shaw Island is the
smallest of the San Juan Islands serviced by the Washington State
Ferries. It is the place for the
ultimate relaxing get-a-way. The little
used roads are popular with bicyclists and walkers. The only commercial establishment is the
small Little Portion Store (360-468-2288) next to the ferry landing that
was operated by the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist. Recently the order left the island and
sold the store to a local island resident.
South Beach offers
opportunities to explore the tide pools.
The shallow water warms enough to wade. Shaw Island County Park on Squaw Bay Road
(360-378-1842) has 12 primitive campsites. Bed and Breakfasts and other
lodging are prohibited on the island so you can only make day trips to this
lovely island. There are no medical
facilities on the island.
In general, most of the
visitors to the island are cyclists who want to ride their bikes on the quiet
roads of the island. The island is
relatively flat so cyclists don’t encounter a lot of hills.
