Friday Harbor is on San Juan Island in the San Juan Archipelago. San Juan Island is one of the San Juan Islands that make up San Juan County. The islands are located in what is commonly called the Greater Puget Sound in northwest Washington State.

In the map below of the “Greater Puget Sound” inland waters you can see that Vancouver Island, part of British Columbia, Canada, is located to the west of the San Juan Islands, protecting them from the wave action and the weather of the Pacific Ocean to the west. The San Juan Islands also are in the weather shadow of the Olympic Mountains on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula.

A little about Friday Harbor

San Juan Island is the second largest of the San Juan Islands and Friday Harbor with it’s over 2,000 residents is the largest community in Island County.

San Juan Island is the furthest west of the islands serviced by Washington State Ferries. Victoria, BC on Vancouver island is only 7 miles west across Haro Strait from the west shore of the island.

Friday Harbor is located on the more protected east side of the island in a protected harbor. The harbor is a United States Port of Entry so the harbor is busy with boat traffic entering the United States mainly from Canada. To add to the action on the harbor the Washington State Ferries also have a terminal in the harbor.

Because of the ferry connection Friday is a vacation destination. Also, the Port of Friday Harbor has a large marina facility with hundreds of visitor spaces so the boating public also heads for Friday Harbor. The docks are alive with interesting action that you can watch from large oceangoing yachts going through Customs to sea planes landing and charter boats coming and going.

If you arrive by ferry or boat you can see the main street, Spring Street, goes up a gentle hill. It is lined with businesses on both sides. It is easy to lose yourself for a whole day just nosing around in all the interesting and unique stores and trying out the restaurants.
