The small Pacific Ocean Beach community of Grayland, Washington is on the Cranberry Coast.  The Cranberry Coast is the leading edge of what we call the Cranberry Peninsula which lies between Grays Harbor and Willapa Bay.  It is one of the great places in Washington State to visit the Pacific Ocean Beaches.

The first settlers in this area were Finnish.  They developed cranberry bogs and a flourishing cranberry industry here nearly 150 years ago.  The cranberry industry is still flourishing.  Nearly half of the cranberries grown in Washington State are grown on the Cranberry Peninsula.

Grayland has a population of around 1,800 people.  To live here and survive you must be as persistent as the ocean waves.  Life is a constant fight against the salt laden Pacific winds, especially in the winter.

To the west of the highway is the beach, an almost never-ending strip of wide, flat, white sand.  The beach is 18 miles long.  This is a marvelous place to walk on the beach, play at waters edge with the kids, or fly a kite.

Grayland is located in Grays Harbor County at the bottom of the map above just north of the Grays Harbor / Pacific County Line.

The Cranberry

The cranberry is the king in this area and much of the local population is involved in the cranberry industry.  In late June the cranberries bloom and in October the harvest of the berries gives off a vibrant show of color.  They have an annual Cranberry Festival that features a cranberry cooking contest, live music, tours of the cranberry bogs, and an arts & crafts fare.  The Chamber of Commerce (listed below) has current information on their web site, look at their “local events” page.
