Bowen Island was originally named by the Spanish in 1791. In 1860 is was renamed for Rear Admiral Bowen who served under Admiral Howe. He never saw the island that was named after him. Since the 1900s Bowen Island has been a favorite getaway for the residents of the Lower Mainland. There are two marinas on the island so it is also a favorite with the yachting crowd. Visitors will find several picnic grounds, restaurants, pubs, coffee shops, gift stores on the island, many of which are located near the ferry terminal. No overnight camping or RV use is permitted on the island. However, there are many fine overnight accommodations on the island. Crippen Regional Park has several hiking trails and the hike to Mount Gardner offers panoramic views of the Strait of Georgia. Bowen Island has a population of around 3,500 people. To find Bowen Island take the Trans-Canada Highway-1 west to the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal. Take the Bowen Island Ferry.
