Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada is located in the southwestern corner of the Fraser Valley. It lies close to the foothills of the Cascade Mountain Range and Mount Baker.

Chilliwack is a city of about 63,000 with an elevation of 33 feet (10 m.) above sea level. It is in the upper Fraser River valley. The historic downtown is located about 1.7 mi. south of the Fraser River’s banks about half way between Highway 1 and the River.

Chilliwack lies in the center of a prosperous dairy and farming region. The rivers and lakes in the area offer a multitude of recreational opportunities.

The scenery here is breathtaking. The flat river valley with its lush farmlands is bordered by relatively high hills, some with rugged cliffs dropping straight down to the valley floor.

The City of Chilliwack

In the beginning Chilliwack was a landing for the steamboats traversing the Fraser River. In 1857 gold was found in the upper Fraser River Valley and by 1858 well over 30,000 people seeking riches in the form of gold had passed through this area.

There were three main riverboat landings for the sternwheelers that came out of New Westminster, they were Miller’s Landing, Sumas Landing, and Chilliwack Landing. In 1873 the Township of Chilliwack was incorporated making it the third oldest municipality in the province.
