Squamish is the “Half Way Point” of a trip from Vancouver to the Ski slopes at Whistler. It is about a 45 minute trip to both Whistler and Vancouver from Squamish.

On the bottom map of the map to the left Squamish is up the shoreline on the west side of the North Shore area above where the top of the map ends.

Howe Sound

Squamish is at the northern tip of Howe Sound. Howe Sound is a fjord that runs 27 miles (44 Km) inland from the Strait of Georgia. Howe Sound’s mouth at the Strait of Georgia is about 10 miles (16 Km) wide.

However, Bowen, Anvil, Keats, and Gambier Islands lie in the first 15 miles (24 Km) of the mouth of Howe Sound making access from the Strait through three smaller channels.

The Coastal Mountains

You access Squamish via BC Highway-99 north from Vancouver. From Horseshoe Bay north the highway runs right along the shore of Howe Sound. On the other side of the highway are the steep slopes of the Coastal Mountain Range with their snow covered peaks. On your drive up the shore of the Sound you are treated to a virtual slide show of magnificent views of the Sound, the Islands, and the Coastal Mountains across the Sound as well as the shoreline in front of you.

Squamish Attractions

Squamish is surrounded by the towering Coast Range Mountains and exposed to the salt air blowing off of Howe Sound so this seaside community in the mountains has a lot to offer. Squamish offers world class recreation including kayaking, boating, fishing, wind surfing, kiteboarding, beach walking, hiking, mountain biking, and rock climbing to name just a few.

Squamish Spit

The Squamish Spit is a long breakwater at the mouth of the Squamish River. This is a haven for wind surfers and often during the afternoon winds in the summer you will find 100 cars parked here. This is also an access to the Squamish Estuary where the fresh water meets the sea water. There is a unique eco-system here with canal like channels and grassy wetlands. Thousands of ducks and geese live here and over 200 species of birds have been identified, including Eagles, Hawks, and Osprey.

Eagles

If Eagles are your interest then you want to visit Squamish from Mid-December to Mid-January when thousands of Eagles are wintering over here. They have a viewing facility at Eagle Run Park. To find it turn off BC-99 at Manquam Road and go north on Government Road to the viewing area. There is an interpretive display on the life cycles of Eagles and Salmon.
