BC-GVancouver01.jpgPort Moody

The City of Port Moody, BC, Canada is located in British Columbia’s lower mainland at the head of Burrard Inlet.  It is also at the foot of Eagle Mountain.

The population of Port Moody is about 30,000.  The City was incorporated in 1913..  It is about a 40 minute drive from downtown Vancouver, BC.

The North Trail

Port Moody is 4.5 miles (7.3 Km) north of New Westminster via the North Road.  In 1859 the Royal Engineers commanded by Col. Richard Moody (The City is named after him) were directed to clear a trail from Burrard inlet to New Westminster for defense purposes.  The North Road is that same trail.  The road can most easily be found by going northeast on 10th Avenue to its end, it terminates at North Road.

Where is Port Moody?

Port Moody is roughly “U” shaped around the east end of Burrard Inlet.  Its southern border is only about one half mile south of the inlet.  In general its borders are all less than a mile (1.6 Km) from the inlet.

Click here or on the map

to see a larger version.

Port Moody is surrounded by Coquitlam.  If you look at Coquitlam on the map to the left it is along the top left of center and is yellow in color.  Two-thirds of the way down its left border Burrard Inlet juts into Coquitlam.  The area around the inlet is Port Moody.

Port Moody is most easily found by taking Trans-Canada to Exit 40.  Go northeast on Burnette Avenue for 0.3 mi. (0.5 Km) to the Lougheed Highway and turn left (west).  Travel 1.1 mi (1.8 Km) west on the Lougheed Highway then turn right onto North Road.  The north road will take you into Port Moody.  The road will take a turn to the right onto Clark road and end at its Junction with Highway-7A as it goes through Port Moody.

The Railroad

Port Moody was the original terminus of the transcontinental railroad.  In 1879 Port Moody was named the western terminus for the Canadian Pacific Railway.  On July 4, 1886 the first transcontinental train arrived at Port Moody with about 150 passengers.

Shopping

Port Moody’s historic downtown area can be found on St. Johns Street which is also BC Highway-7A between Elgin and Moray Streets.  The downtown area is alive and vibrant with many interesting shops and restaurants.

Port Moody also has a new shopping area, Newport Village.  It is located in Port Moody’s new town centre area.  From St. Johns Street at the east end of the downtown area turn north on Loco Road and go 0.3 miles (0.5 Km).
