SurryNeighborhoods2007.jpgThe Whalley and the City Center area of Surrey, British Columbia, Canada is located in the lower mainland of British Columbia.

Whalley and City Center are neighborhoods in the City of Surrey.  Surrey is shown in golden-yellow along the bottom of the map of the lower mainland below.

The map to the left shows the City of Surrey with the non-Surrey areas shown in yellow.  The City of White Rock is shown in tan at the bottom center of Surrey.  White Rock is not part of Surrey.  However, we have treated White Rock as if it is a part of the area.

The City of Surrey is more like a County in the United States than a city in that it really has several individual communities within its boundaries.  However, like a city in the United States, it is governed by a Mayor and council.

Don’t be confused by us acting like there are individual cities inside Surrey, there is only one governmental entity, the City of Surrey.  The thing is, that if you ask a local where Whalley is he will give you directions and act like it is a city.  Whalley feels like a city in that it has a central business core with surrounding residential areas.

Where is Whalley?

The Whalley and the City Center areas of Surrey are most easily found by taking Highway-99A (The King George Highway) north from Exit 10 on Highway-99.  Exit 10 is 6.3 miles (10 KM) north of the US/Canada Peace Arch border crossing at Blaine.

Travel about 9 miles north on the King George Highway and you will find yourself in Whalley.

The other way to find the Whalley and City Center areas of Surrey is to take the  Patullo Bridge over the Fraser River south from New Westminster.  When you hit the south shore of the Fraser River you are in Whalley.

The Whalley district us located in the north west corner of Surrey along the Fraser River.  The Fraser River is its northern boundary.  Scott Road (120th Street) is its western boundary except at the north end, at 96th Avenue Whalley’s boundary juts west to the Fraser River.  Whalley extends south to 88th Avenue and juts south of that in a couple of spots.  Its eastern boundary is 144th Street.

The City Center District

The City Center district of Surrey is also what you would perceive as Whalley’s city center.  The King George Highway runs right through the middle of the City Centre area.  Its south boundary is 92nd Avenue and its north boundary is 112th Avenue.

Its west boundary is 132nd Street and in general its east boundary is 140th street with a couple of areas east of 140th.

The population of the City Centre area is a little over 20,000.

The Whalley District has a population of around 60,000.
