City of Surrey
Surrey is a huge city in terms
of physical size, it is nearly 15 miles ( 24 KM) north to south and nearly
10 miles (16 KM) east to west.
The neighborhoods of the
City function more like cities than neighborhoods in that each neighborhood
has a name that everyone knows and most treat it like a city, in that if
you ask a local where Newton is, he will give you directions and if you ask
him were the Newton City Hall is he may say, “I don’t Know” instead of
Newton isn’t a city, it’s a neighborhood.
Also, each neighborhood has a downtown area. Though we may be guilty of treating these
communities as cities, they are unincorporated cities or neighborhoods
without separate governments, they are part of the City of Surrey.

Where is Newton?
The Newton
area of Surrey is most easily found by taking highway-99 north from Blaine,
Washington. Take the King George
Highway north from Exit 10 on BC Highway-99. It is 6.3 miles (10 KM) north of the US/Canada
Peace Arch border crossing at Blaine.
Travel
about 6 miles north on the King George Highway (BC-99A) and you will find
yourself in Newton. The King George
Highway runs right up through a little east of center of the area.
The Newton District is in
the center of the western border of Surrey. Its northern border for the most part is 88th Avenue
in the west and 80th
Avenue in the east. Its southern border is the 56th
and 57th Avenues which are BC Highway-10. Its western boundary is 120th Street
(The Scott Road) and its eastern border is 152nd Street.
The population of the
Newton District is over 91,000.
Newton is mainly a residential area with two main commercial areas.
Getting around in Surrey
One interesting note
about getting around is that the Surrey is laid out on a 1 mile square grid
of main streets. The north south
streets of 120th, 128th, 136th (King
George Highway), 144th, and 152nd are main north south roads. The east west roads of 56th
Ave (Highway-10), 64th Avenue, 72nd Ave, 80th
Ave., 88th Ave., 96th Ave., and 104th
Avenue are also one mile apart and are through streets. The streets inside these grids (8 blocks)
are residential and most of them are laid out in such a way that they are
not through streets, keeping the traffic to the main arterials. This grid tends to disappear south of
Highway-10 in the South Surrey district. In general the main highways;
Trans-Canada-1, Hwy-99, and the Fraser Valley Highway do not follow the
grid and go at odd angles.
Newton’s Downtown
Newton’s downtown area occurs along the King George Highway (135th
Street) from 56th Avenue to 80th Avenue. Through this area the highway is five
lanes with the center lane being mainly left turn lanes. There are a wide variety of businesses
from quite old and in what could be called historic structures to modern
new shopping centers. This highway
has history, before the Highway-99 freeway was built in the 1960’s this was
the main highway between Seattle and Vancouver.
Scott Road (120th Street)
Two miles (3.2 KM) to the west is another downtown area in Newton,
along the Scott Road (120th Street). It lies on the border between Surrey and
Delta in the Community of North Delta.
The west side of the street is North Delta and the east side of the
street is the Newton area of Surrey.
For ease of use we have put all of the information for this shopping
area(both sides of the street) on our North Delta Page.

Newton Attractions
Newton Recreation Centre – This fun filled water recreation center offers
a water fortress complete with water blasters, water slides, hoses, and
nozzles. There are also two massive
water slides, including the “Black Mamba” a dizzying trip through darkness
on a water slide. They also have a
wave pool for surfing and wave riding.
They have a hot tub for all ages and a steam room for adults. They also have fully equipped cardio and
weight rooms. There are two
cafeterias and a licensed lounge (bar).
There is even a swimwear shop.
People travel from as far away as Bellingham, Washington
State to visit this facility.
Bear Creek Park
Located in the heart of the City Center District you will find Bear
Creek Park at the corner of King George Highway and 88th
Avenue. This is a great spot to stop
and stretch your legs and use the facilities. You will also find a miniature railroad
ride and the Surrey Arts Center in the park.
Miniature Railroad – Bear Creek Park opens at 10:00 am
365 days a year. They have a
historic miniature diesel and steam engines. The ride goes through a magic forest and
a tunnel with displays in it. This
ride is fun for all ages. It is
located in Bear Creek Park. See the
address and website link below under Recommended Parks.
Surrey Arts Center – Music and dance performances both
professional and community in nature are performed in the two theaters
located here. There is also an art
gallery and a gift shop. The building
is located in Bear Creek Park.
We have
stopped at Bear Creek Park literally hundreds of times to use the
restrooms. Bear Creek Park seems to
be in one of those areas where we need facilities and to get out of the car
and stretch in our travels. The
restrooms are convenient for the traveler with outside access. We saw the Art Center building each time
we visited the park but somehow found the appearance of the building
uninviting.
In December
of 2007 while taking a walk in the park because we were tired of sitting in
the car we walked up to the door of the Surrey Art Center because a lot of
people were going in and out. To our
surprise a wonderful woman that was working there walked over to us and
asked if she could help us.
We were made
very welcome and spent about an hour looking at the art exhibits. We suggest you walk past the cold
exterior of the building to the warm folks waiting to help you on the
inside. For more information and a
website link see Recommended Attractions
below.
