The City of Burnaby, BC, Canada is located in British Columbia’s lower mainland. In the bottom map to the left Burnaby is green. It is immediately east of Vancouver (pink) and northwest of Surrey (golden yellow).

Burnaby is the third-largest city in British Columbia behind Vancouver (No.1) and Surrey (No. 2). Burnaby was incorporated in 1892 and achieved city status in 1992, one hundred years after it incorporated. Burnaby is also the host of the Greater Vancouver Regional District (Metro Vancouver).

Burnaby has three highways running through it. First is the Trans-Canada Highway-1. This freeway runs from Victoria to Eastern Canada.

Second, is Highway-1A (The Fraser Valley Highway). Until the Trans-Canada Highway was built this was the main highway from Vancouver to the Fraser Valley and points north and east.

Thirdly, is Highway-99A (The King George Highway). This highway was the main access from Vancouver to the lower 48 states via the border crossing at Blaine, Washington until the Highway-99 freeway was built to connect to Interstate-5 at Blaine.

Highway-99A and 1A join together in north Surrey and share the same roadbed through Burnaby. This highway is a center for commercial activity its entire length through Burnaby.
